August 14, 2011 at 1:50 amHi, Jonathan. My name is Jason Banico and I’m a software developer. In a couple of weeks, I am launching two choose-your-own-adventure apps on the Apple AppStore.I was wondering if you’d like to publish your books as an interactive app as well.
I can convert your text into an app through my customized editor and reader. I offer 50/50 split for the revenue share Apple provides.I can send you screenshots of the 2 apps I’m releasing, if you’re interested. Thanks!Best regards,Jason Banico. July 27, 2019 at 10:10 pmI am almost halfway through Child of the Ghosts (which I started last night) and am thoroughly enjoying how you are developing Caina’s character. I have to say though that I am seeing many errors or omissions in your sentence structure that I find very distracting. I have found at least 4 to 8 errors in each chapter (perhaps more but I haven’t been recording them).
If you would be willing, I would like to proof a test chapter for you to show you what I mean. You can send it to and I would return a marked up copy to you within 24 hours. July 20, 2012 at 4:19 pmHi Richard,Basically, you need to make your book free on Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and Smashwords first.
(You can get it to go free on B&N and iTunes by setting it to free on Smashwords and then letting Smashwords distribute it to B&N and iTunes, which usually takes a few weeks. Now that Kobo has its own self-publishing portal, you can just set it to free there.)Then, once the book is free on all the other sites, you go to the “tell us about a lower price” link on the book’s Amazon page and enter the links. It helps if you can get friends to do so as well.-JM. August 29, 2013 at 12:51 pmI am almost finished reading the first book in your “Ghosts” series, and I really like it! I was, however, distracted by multiple word omissions, grammar issues, and slight inconsistency of character. It seems you are writing at a speed that precludes the possibility of self-revision, and you cannot depend on your software to catch subtle errors such as these.
You have a flair for engaging readers with well-developed characters and provocative storylines, but I fear you will not be taken seriously until you take the time to address these issues. PLEASE, this advice does not come from a negative place, hire an editor to find and correct these mistakes. There is endless potential in your writing, spend the time to develop and perfect it, as your character Caina did in the story. No time spent in pursuit of this goal is wasted. February 25, 2014 at 10:34 pmI have a question about your book, Ubuntu The Desktop Beginner’s Guide.I’ve tried various Linux distros for 10 years and always I finally run into something that no matter how/where/why I search, I can’t get a “usable” answer. For example, Adobe flash for viewing videos clips and such, how to burn a CD, and other things that any computer today should already have on it and ready to roll.I have an eBay business where I have to list items to sell on eBay. May 12, 2014 at 9:43 amHi JonathanI have read all of the ghost books from the first free one to where I’m now waiting on Ghost in a Maze, in just the past two months or so.
Just could not stop! But I do have one major thing I’d like to bring up to you. I hope you have someone proof read your new books before you release them. There are SO many errors (missing or extra words in a sentence or wrong words (see instead of sea)) in all the books it was unreal. I have been helping an other author with his dads books (The Bandworld series) He pays me $100 per book and I’d be happy to help you for the same because I love your books just as much. But even if you don’t want my help PLEASE have someone do it!
Just hard to recommend people to buy them with all the errors in them. It’s like they aren’t done yet. Sorry But not to worry, even if you don’t use me I’ll keep reading your books because even with the errors there GREAT!!Thanks for the great books! Can’t wait until the next book is releasedEd. September 8, 2014 at 11:22 amThanks for the kind words about the books!
I’m glad you liked them.Concerning Ubuntu and laptops, the brand is generally less important than whether or not there are good Linux drivers available for the individual devices in the laptop. Like, if you get a laptop with an Intel graphics adapter and an Intel wireless card, you’ll probably be in good shape, since Intel’s Linux driver support is typically pretty good.
NVIDIA’s Linux drivers are pretty good as well. Avoid laptops with ATI graphics, since the AMD/ATI Linux situation isn’t good, and Broadcom and Realtek wireless drivers are often quite bad on Linux. You can check which devices are known to work with Ubuntu here:. March 9, 2015 at 3:18 pmThanks for the kind words about the books! I’m glad you liked them.Generally, the short stories can be read in any order.
That said, here is the complete chronological order of both the novels and the short stories:Child of the GhostsGhost AriaGhost in the FlamesGhost DaggerGhost LightGhost in the BloodThe Fall of KyraceGhost in the StormGhost in the StoneGhost in the ForgeGhost ClawsGhost OmensGhost in the AshesGhost in the MaskGhost ThornsGhost UndyingGhost in the SurgeGhost in the CowlGhost SwordGhost in the MazeGhost PriceGhost RelicsGhost in the HuntGhost KeeperGhost NailsBlood ArtistsBound To The EyeGhost in the Razor-JM. August 28, 2015 at 11:07 pmJonothan, this is an absolute first for me.
I’ve never cared to visit an authors page before let alone felt compelled to leave a comment. I am on Book 9 of the Ghost series and am really enjoying it.
I would like to know who is proofing for you since I am coming across more frequent misspellings or grammatical errors the further I go I to the series. Aside from that, why in Gods name over the course of 8 books has no one forged a set of ghostsilver throwing knives. She is constantly in need of the distance, they certain have the funds and associations. It’s brought up in each book how the dagger isn’t balanced for throwing, at some point can’t she do something clever like get a set forged? Sorry it’s been a huge peeve, after awhile I would think that would be a natural progression. Really though I am enjoying this and look forward to the exile set.
August 28, 2015 at 11:15 pmThanks for the kind words about the books! I’m glad you liked them.I’ve had mixed results with proofreaders, alas, as you have seen. П™‚Concerning the ghostsilver daggers, ghostsilver is really, really rare. Like, the entire wealth of a nation rare. The ancient Iramisians knew how to make ghostsilver, but they’re not around any more. So there are only a few hundred extant ghostsilver weapons in the world.
The Ghosts have most of them, and they don’t want to lose any.-JM. November 16, 2015 at 7:08 amHithis is Luke and I would like to say thanks for writing Ghost in Throne, It is a great book and a great read. And I would like to to ask a question, In one of the other books you said Sliver or some name like that and burns people from the inside. When he tried to burn Caina and she resisted, then when she threatened to kill herself and tike it with her it left here and left some of its power inside Caina. Shouldn’t she be able to use it because it is not and art but a but something now part of her?. November 16, 2015 at 2:05 pmThe part of the Sifter that was left inside Caina withered and died in short order – sort of like when a wolf gnaws its own leg off to escape a steel trap. So it didn’t have any long-term effect on her.(In terms of storytelling mechanics, I hadn’t decided at that point if I wanted the Huntress or the Sifter to be Caina’s long-term nemesis, and I eventually went with the Huntress.)The important point about Caina’s encounter with the Sifter is that she can be possessed, but she cannot be controlled by the possessing spirit, just like with the Moroaica.
That will be important again later. May 2, 2016 at 8:18 pmIt hasn’t been a problem – it’s something like 1 to 2 percent a month, so low I don’t even bother tracking it.I do think a generous return policy is a good idea. Yes, there will be serial abusers, but most of them are pirating their ebooks anyway (and Amazon does have a history of banning users who return too much digital media). To be candid about it, I think this is a complaint of newer writers, one who still take a return.personally.
Like, whenever you see a petition demanding that Amazon police Goodreads reviews or 1-star reviews on Amazon, at the root it’s usually either a new-ish writer who just got her first 1-star review and lost her mind over it, or a group of writers that got into a spat with each other and started giving each other 1-star reviews. In the end, I suspect a relatively generous return policy goes a long way towards building customer goodwill, which is probably one of the reasons why Amazon dominates online retail so much. A returned ebook isn’t great, but it’s vastly better than a reader who is stuck with an ebook he hates, and will let all and sundry know that he hates the ebook rather than returning it and forgetting about it. May 8, 2016 at 1:57 amJust thought I would drop a note here to say thank you for inspiring my youngest son (he is 17) to write! I have given him to links to all the blog posts you have written (or the ones I could find anyways) about self publishing and he has looked into them all. He has been typing away on some dystopian type short stories.
Not sure, at this point if he will actually publish any of them but he is happy to be doing it.Thanks! One question though, do you use Scrivener from start to finish when working on your book or do you use a word processor then use Scrivener to clean up the formatting? Looking into it for both my son and I. May 8, 2016 at 1:25 pmThanks! Hope he enjoys writing the stories.I currently use Word 2016 or LibreOffice Writer to do the actual writing and editing, and then to create the ebook file, I use Sigil to create the EPUB file, and Calibre to convert it to MOBI for Amazon. I’ve thought about learning Scrivener, but I’ve never gotten around to it.
The process I have now works fine, and Scrivener has a bit of a learning curve. Also, I do my writing on three different computers depending on where I am on that particular day, and it’s easy to keep the files synced with Word/LibreOffice. Not sure how Scrivener would handle it. But I had heard good things about Scrivener. May 29, 2016 at 11:07 pmHi,I’m somewhat puzzled. I see that you have written a lot of fantasy books, but you also seem to be somewhat geeky and into Ubuntu etc, plus you are quite sociable online. How does that work?
A sociable geek? I mean, I am part of the techy community too and most of the geeky things here struggle to socialise, let alone have sufficient imagination to write fantasy books!I have to take my hat off to you sir, I admire how you are able to make the different facets of your life coexist happily. Please tell me how you get your inspiration for your books.😉. May 30, 2016 at 12:57 amThanks for the kind words! It is kind of funny to hear that, because I’m really not all that sociable. If I wasn’t a writer, I wouldn’t be on social media at all. I just follow a couple of rules – I set aside a half hour every day to answer emails and tweets and comments, and I avoid personal topics and politics. Also, I think it’s important to stay grateful. People who contact me usually have bought one or more of my books, taken the time to read them, and then taken the time to write to me. So I’m grateful for that, and it’s only polite to write back. Most of my book ideas come from ancient and medieval history – SOUL OF SORCERY was based on the Thervingi invasion in the Late Roman Empire, and THE GHOSTS series is sort of based on what I think the Western Roman Empire would have been like if it survived to the Renaissance, albeit with more sorcerers.
November 10, 2016 at 3:55 pmHi JMI am a massive fan I have read every series you have written so far except wizard of the white council which I’m half way through and Destroyer of worlds which is on my Kobo ready to start. Trouble is having now read everything is there going to be any more from the ghosts or demonsouled or frostborn, or cloak games or any of the other brilliant series.I’m not looking forward to the prospect of finding a new author to read until your next books are out so will keep my eye out but id be grateful for a heads up of whats in the pipeline so that I know what to look forward too. January 6, 2017 at 10:12 amHi JM,I’ve just finished your Third Soul Omnibus Two. I started with Demonsouled/Mask of, then read Frostborn and Ghosts/Ghost Exile, so I’m pretty familiar with your work!
I’m also an Amazon top reviewer.Obviously, I enjoy your books. Stories which are completely unique, not recycling any other author’s style, characters, creatures, or anything else are fairly hard to find, and it’s always such a pleasant surprise when we come across them. You, however, take pleasant surprise and turn it into pure excitement! Each series you create is entirely original as well as quite lengthy (and as a fan of Drizzt, long series are obviously a personal favorite). All of that said, I do have one problem with your writing. Please, for the sake of your fans, consider editing your work. In each of the many books I’ve devoured, there have been literally hundreds of mistakes and typos.
A missing word here, extra word there, and other very simple mistakes are everywhere. The stories, characters, plot lines. Everything you write is so wonderful, publishing it with up to six simple mistakes on one page is like shooting yourself in the foot.I don’t say this to be critical. I say it because not everyone realizes how much damage simple errors can do to a book. I’m bedridden and terminal. For me, reading is the only way I can truly escape the pain. The ability to lose myself in another world is my only refuge, and I’m infinitely grateful to the authors who create those lovely places.
Every time I come across one of these simple errors, it’s like my mind glitches, does a double take, and reality comes crashing back. It ruins the experience for more of your readers than you might think, sir, and it would be such a simple thing to fix.Thank you for the wonderful people and places you give to the world, Mr. I wanted you to know just how much they can mean to some readers because reading isn’t always about entertainment. For people like me, it’s the only way to stay sane! I sincerely hope I haven’t offended you and genuinely look forward to any and every book you may offer in future.
May 18, 2018 at 10:51 pmMr. Moeller,I want to thank you for the dramatic reduction in typos since I first wrote to you. I’m still out here scooping up everything you create, all the short stories included.
I even (finally!) convinced my 15 year old to give Ridmark a chance.I feel almost like a blasphemer for saying so, but after years as my favorite author, Salvatore is #3 these days. You and Robert J. Crane (Have you read him?) are easily the best fantasy authors of the decade. You both have historic fantasy, alternate modernist, and sci-fi.
Each genre is represented with so varied a voice it’s hard to believe it’s actually the same author. And your prolificacy is absolutely inhuman it’s so impressive!Thank you again for giving the world beautiful, magical, creatively unique places to run to when we need them.
You are unbelievably talented! Still looking forward to every new word.
May 18, 2018 at 11:14 pmThanks! “Alternate Modernist” – I will have to remember that as a way to describe CLOAK GAMES.I don’t think I’ve ever read anything by Robert Crane, but I do see his books turn up in my books’ Amazon Also Boughts quite often. The typo situation improved significantly when I started experimenting with the Text To Speech feature on the Kindle Fire tablets. I found that if I had the Fire read the book aloud to me, I caught many more typos. It’s annoying to do, but it reduces typos, and I don’t have to find and pay someone to do typo hunting. October 16, 2018 at 2:13 amHello again sir! I admit, I spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out how to most accurately describe both CLOAK GAMES and Robert Crane’s GIRL IN THE BOX series! П˜„I’m still awed by how prolific you are.
I took a little time catching up on some other series and read through a new one. Afterward, I checked your page to see if there was anything new – THREE new novels plus the novellas!
П˜° Sometimes, I wonder if you’ve somehow trained your body to survive with only an hour of sleep every 3 days or something!Oh regarding typos: I saw someone named Max offer to fix them for you free of charge. It was in his reply to your Welcome message.
I would happily do it too! You seem to have a knack for inspiring volunteerism. П˜‰I posted this on Facebook today I hope it’s okay to kind of advertise like this?. March 12, 2017 at 6:08 pmI was going through some older blog posts, and noted some interesting facts:July 2013 – you sold your 100,000th book – so 2years to sell the first 100k booksApril 2016 – you sold your 400,000th book – a little less than 3 years to sell the next 300kI am pretty sure I saw post saying you already hit 600k, but can’t find it! Impressive, keep it up!Now a question for you about the creation of the Frostborn plot. Did you write the plot knowing it would be 15 books, or did you write the plot then look at the rhythm of the plot to decide where the breaks are?How often do you look at something you just wrote and ask yourself where that scene or dialogue came from?Creating that initial plot for me is the most difficult part of the process.
March 12, 2017 at 7:12 pmThanks! I think as of February I got up to 700k, but I haven’t done the final math yet.I did plot out the entirety of the FROSTBORN series back in late 2012, and I did plan for 15 books from the beginning. There were changes during the writing, though. I think the biggest changes were the expansion of Mara’s role, the addition of the Traveler, and the fact that Imaria Licinius and Morigna were originally supposed to be the same character.“How often do you look at something you just wrote and ask yourself where that scene or dialogue came from?”Not too often – usually something unexpected is a logical result of something I wrote/decided earlier.Writing the initial outline is difficult, since it’s sort of the activation energy for the whole process. But I’ve always found that outlining first helps avoid problems later. October 1, 2017 at 8:37 pmI’ve just discovered your books and I really like them. The first one I bought was Ghost Girl, then Ghost in the Flames, then Ghost in the Blood, nearly immediately after finishing each one.
I wish they were longer though! I read really fast and they seem to end too soon for me I think you’ve hooked another reader!I find it pretty amazing that you write computer books too. I’ll have to check those out as well. I need help in that area, even if I am on a computer all day at work; sometimes the basics elude meAnyway, thank you for your wonderful writing. I’m always amazed at how creative people are, and you are one of those people.
November 12, 2017 at 10:08 pmHi Jonathan, I’ve been a fan of your work for a while now and a regular visitor here on your website. I’ve seen a few questions/complaints posted here about spelling and grammar mistakes not getting caught in the editing process and that you’ve said you’ve had problems with editors in the past. I would like to make a suggestion for an editor that is refreshingly not myself. I’m not sure if you’re a wrestling fan but this guy Findlay Martin in England @ used to publish a magazine called Powerslam that I collected from Issues 66-237 and I’ve read 3 of his 4 books, (the fourth is about quitting smoking which I’ve thankfully never started). As his website indicates he now takes on freelance editing work. I’ve never spoken with the man but as a longtime fan of his writing and knowing his high standards I thought I’d pass along the contact info to see if its something you’d be interested in.P.S. I recently completed the entire Demonsouled/Mask of the Demonsouled series and I was wondering if you’ve any plans for more of the series?.
